Reviewing #CitiesSkylines2 – My Initial Thoughts

A High Level Review on a Barebones Game

How am I finding Cities Skylines 2 as both an In Real Life Planner (urban, rural and Spatial) and a veteran of the City Building Simulation games going right back to Sim City 2000 and all its successors?

In the video below I give a high level review of the game through its strengths, opportunities, challenges, and a pet peeve Collosal Order and Paradox should not have done and still do somewhat (causing a diminshing of respect).

An initial Review on Cities Skylines 2

The video is part of a larger video I did for Neo South Auckland as the City continues to expand and work through its population milestones. The full video will be at the bottom of the video.

But in short:

  1. Game is a B. Not terrible but not great worthy of game with the AAA ranking especially of its predecessor, not yet anyway
  2. Limitations in game play. However, this is tempered with the 8 years of Cities Skylines 1 becoming an AAA game from also once barebones. Also the mods will do their thing as I have come to expect of them already
  3. Getting extremely annoyed how CO and Paradox shopped the game to just about every streamer and YouTuber out there for reckons and hype to the point I started losing respect towards those who I once followed. Next time don’t, keep the Beta closed and when ready to go Alpha have a very select few from the actual Planning profession market the game out
  4. Where I like to see the game go

In the end though my expectations are tempered with CO working hard on the game, and knowing it took eight years for Cities Skylines 1 to become the AAA game it could be (built on a 2015 engine).
