Cycling Update for  #citiesskylines2 | Also Multi-Modal Transit in Action

Key Transport Asset finally coming to “liberate” cities in Cities Skylines 2!

Those familar with Cities Skylines 1 will know the power of the bike and bike lane when the After Dark DLC was released. Designed and built properly, bike infrastructure was a major asset in busting congestion whether the cim used the bike for the entire trip, or part of the First/Last Mile Gap linking in with transit.

Unfortunately Cities Skylines 2 would not come with bikes and bike lanes right off the bat. We saw bike racks with some assets which meant there was something about bikes lurking away in the background somewhere.

And there was. Colossal Order were meant to have bikes running when CS2 came out but the mechanics were not ready so they disabled them from front-end game play. However, we have finally got an update on all thing’s bikes. I cover this in my video below.

All things bikes, and bikes in action!

Multi-Modal Transport in Action with Cities Skylines 1

As I was recording the video I decided to zoom in on a cyclist to see where they were going. Little did I know at the time that I would see multi-modal transportation in action. That is more than one mode of transport (that excludes walking) being used for a Cim to get to their destination demonstrating how integrated transport systems can work! The Cim rode their bike from their home to the Monorail/Bus Station, caught the mono-train to the station closest to their work place, then biked to their final destination (the Sky Tower).

In standard transport planning, a rapid transit line (so has its own right of way) has a walk-up catchment of about 800 metres or 10 minutes with their stations. A bus line mixed with general traffic is about 400 metres. As rapid transit lines are often fixed route their catchments on their own can be limited. Feeder buses, and bikes can extend the rapid transit station catchment up to around 1.5km although greater distances are regularly observed. Feeder buses and bikes subsequently form what is the first and last mile gap with a fixed route rapid transit line.

And this is what we see here in this Cities Skylines 1 video: an integrated, multi modal transit system in action thanks to integrated land use / transport planning with the Papatoetoe Transit Oriented Development. Integrated planning that will be replicated across the city and eventually into my Cities Skylines 2 cities!
