Time for our SECOND review, as Waikato hits LARGE city status #urbanplanning
When Waikato was first “reviewed” the city was at medium city status and around 50-62,000 cims. Now, after Part 5 of the Waikato Series heading into Part 6 the City has grown to 173,000 and definitely sits in LARGE city status for a Cities Skylines 2 creation. So what has changed 110 odd thousand cims later?
Time for a review of Waikato, a recap on my common urban geography and planning styles I use with my CS2 (and CS1) cities and inspiration drawn from the real world!
Waikato puts on its Big Boi Pants and enters the large cities league.
As Waikato enters the large city league, (requiring me to up my Planning, Design, and Evaluation capacity to handle what is now a very complex organism) a key tool will certainly help the chaos not become an absolute meltdown for all those who reside in the city. I pointed it out ever so briefly in the video when talking about urban islands, but I feel it needs a bit more prominence given its Spatial prominence in my cities.
Welcome to the Superblocks which is a real concept in real cities. Barcelona is the most famous example of the Superblock but it is not the only one. In fact Superblocks as such have been with cities since their creation over 6,000 years ago as they are efficient organisers and can help keep incompatible land uses apart from one another. What also assists Superblocks in the modern era is recognising the difference between a road and a street which the infographic points out below.
So, in essence as I prepare Part 6.0 – the City Centre, the Superblock or Urban Island is crucial for liveable functioning Cities!
